Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s lecture at Griffith ‘Sold Out’

  • Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, will visit the Gold Coast to deliver a ‘sold out’ free public lecture at Griffith University in February as part of the ‘TBL Down Under’ Tour.

In Australia for the first time in over a decade, Sir Tim will mark the occasion by outlining his views on open data and the future of innovation.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the visit was secured after a substantial campaign by many sponsors working closely with Gold Coast City Council and Griffith University.

“Sir Tim’s visit is a major coup for the city. The Gold Coast is his only stop in Queensland and it highlights our reputation as the state’s emerging innovation capital,” said Cr Tate.

“Sir Tim is arguably the father of the digital age and I expect a new generation of young local innovators will be inspired by his stories.”

Griffith’s Pro Vice Chancellor, Information Services, Linda O’Brien, said Sir Tim’s public lecture was timely. “Data and information are now the raw materials for innovation and national prosperity, and Australian universities are leading the way in making the outputs of their research and scholarship open and accessible to foster national innovation and development,” said Ms O’Brien.

“Griffith is recognised nationally for its leadership in this field and is very proud to host one of the world’s thought leaders in this area.”

Tickets for Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s lecture, to be held on Saturday 2 February, became available on Monday 21 January and ‘sold out’ in minutes. So due to the popularity of this event, Griffith is offering a special staff-only streamed event at Nathan (please note: you will not get an opportunity to ask questions or see Sir Tim Berners-Lee in the flesh. Also, for copyright purposes, the event can not be live web streamed).
